Sex Without Love

actually this poem made me think about American and most of the guys idea about women. this poem tells us that without love sex is just a mechanical action that we should be aware of however once you involve with that there is no way out. because once you addicted with it you just cant stop yourself even you want to stop. it also talks about the how it feels after wards and it says that 'now you are truly trash' what else can be? you just did it again. you just put water to on a fire of love.

  1. i agree with you. but i dont think she really means that the girl is now trash but the fact that people will get into your head. thats why you feel ashame, like trash. the more people talk the more your gona do it. once you start you cant stop. i think thats what she means

  2. Well, the poem doesn't image anyone as "trash"; also, this is about men and women--about a particular act, rather than an indictment of one sex; more of a cultural criticism.

To get beyond the literal and judgmental aspects of the poem, see the Olds study sheet: How is the speaker both admiring and "deeply critical"? How is sex presented as both "desirable and frightening"? Look closely and the image contrasts and ambiguity of the imagery, how each image condenses a lot: ice skaters, cutting figures in ice--a cold beauty; a sharpness and danger, brightness, pain, sterile beauty, artful precision; an "art" that misses the mystery...
